The client’s vision was to extend and refurbish his heritage winery into a boutique resort nestled in an established vineyard with the panoramic dam view. Accompanying this was a desire for a hospitality experience that celebrated their wine production. He wanted a building that would engage, evoke and establish a dialogue with the exiting surroundings.

The intervention attempts to celebrate Taj Mahal as an epitome of an architectural poetry and physical manifestation of a soulful proposition of the mighty builder Shah Jahan. Whereas, the Black Taj reveals its emptiness through three-dimensional spatial projection. The emptiness holds the space, where the people are purged and aligned by the ecstatic illumination and perfection of Taj Mahal.

The living and working areas are contained in 2 buildings connected by a walkway. The horse-saddle roof doubles up over the brick vault for shade from the tropical sun. Unbuilt – Dr. Vishnuvardhan Memorial, at Mysore, Karnataka, M9 Design Studio – Nischal Abhaykumar

Given that the monument sits in a rural setting, its immediate surroundings are not particularly welcoming. In response, we have enclosed the site with a Gabion wall that provides privacy and guides visitors along a “discovery path” leading to the Memory Monument and the photo gallery all situated within a park-like setting. Crafted entirely out of fine metal, the Memory Monument is in the shape of a “kada” (famously worn as lucky charm by Dr. Vishnuvardhan) stands at a daunting height of 10 metres above the level of lower ground.
