SpaceMatters is an integrated design practise with architecture, interior, urban design and habitat research capabilities based out of New Delhi. Founded in 2005 by architects Amritha Ballal, Moulshri Joshi* and Suditya Sinha the award winning design practice has been consistently recognised as one of the leading design firms in India.
Our projects span a variety of scales and contexts. These range from public institutional projects such as the award winning Bhopal Gas Tragedy Memorial and revitalization for the post-disaster industrial complex in Bhopal, urban planning projects including one of the first Integrated Development Plans (IDP) for urban villages in Dwarka, New Delhi to designing commercial and residential spaces for leading corporates such as Titan, DLF Retail and Jindal Steel.
Habitat Research, an interdisciplinary study on environmental, socio-economic, technical and cultural dimensions of the built environment is an integral aspect of SpaceMatters design practise. SpaceMatters has established research collaborations with the School of Planning and Architecture, Research Council of Norway, NTNU, Norway, University of Gothenburg, Sweden and the University of Tokyo.

Vidya Devi Jindal Paramedical College, Haryana, by SpaceMatters was designed to be a mound emerging from the earth, hence, the low, horizontal form. Red sandstone and brown-coloured concrete recreate earthy palettes of the prehistoric landscape.
Our winning entry for the Baha’I House of Worship in Bihar Sharif, India engages with the spiritual power of space and is based on the faith’s strong sense of spiritual oneness, equality and inclusion. It is poetic for us to be building the second Baha’i temple in India because our understanding of the power of space to inspire came from the powerful architecture of the first Baha’i temple in India, the ‘Lotus Temple’ in Delhi.

One of the first decisions jointly taken by the clients and the design team lead by SpaceMatters was to locate the pavilion in public urban spaces. While this may seem like an obvious choice, similar cultural events in India have been largely confined to institutional spaces such as museums and cultural centres.
This project familiarised us with the ground realities on site, and being challenged in this manner made us reconsider our attitude towards the built environment, to attention to detail, and quality of construction we are satisfied with.
The Snohetta + SpaceMatters design for the Bihar Museum is designed as an iconic setting for the invaluable historic artefacts housed in the erstwhile Patna Museum, while providing an inclusive and vibrant public domain for the city, underscoring the importance of Museums in a contemporary democratic setting. This public domain crucially promotes a sense of collective ownership by engaging a broader audience in a deeper conversation.
