Delhi-based architect and artist Ankon Mitra created Oishi, an architectural scale ‘slice-form’ Origami sculpture/pavilion at the axial centre of the exposition, a lattice of interconnected and flap-folded aluminium sheets – signifying the connections that ABID wanted to forge between architecture, interior design, art, trade and the common man.
On an unremarkable street in South Delhi, the client’s vision for the façade of his house was rather remarkable. Both the neighbouring houses had grooves on stucco plaster, impediments, cornices and Italian marble cladding.
It all starts with the Japanese origami magic ball; folded from a paper into a grid of squares – with two cross-diagonals each – the generated ‘skin’ has a unique property – it is malleable. The same skin with exactly the same of unit squares generates a variety of forms: a cylinder, a spindle, a revolved hyperboloid, a sphere, and also a disc. This is made possible by the unique geometry of the ‘skin’.
Exploring the conjunction of Origami and Architecture, Ankon Mitra’s Oritecture is an imaginative exercise in blurring the boundaries between craft and engineering.
