Parametric Design Workshop, Winter School 2017-18, by rat[LAB] Edu

After a successful completion of 30+ design workshops worldwide, rat[LAB]EDU (Educational subset of rat[LAB]-Research in Architecture & Technology) is organizing PARAMETRIC DESIGN WORKSHOPS for design students & professionals. Winter School 2017-18::Parametric Design Workshops (3-day design workshops) runs across 3 cities in India, with the objective of changing the way we conceive spaces within art, architectural & urban systems and the way architectural education is imparted in the country by inculcating an independent studio culture in the country.

// Winter School 2017 -18

The 3 day intensive workshop for design students & professionals will delve into computational & parametric methods (using Rhino3D & Grasshopper3D) to create data-driven art installations and building facades.
WS17-18 will run across 3 cities in India (Bengaluru, New Delhi & Mumbai) and investigate the agenda of Decoding Parametric Design through Art Installations & Facades with the use of computation and parametric methods.

Studio is designed as a 3-day event in 3 cities comprising of technical tutorials, teaching sessions, prototyping & presentations culminating in a symposium / round-table conference / open discussion with leading / emerging professionals that demonstrate computation, parametric design or alternative techniques in their work / practice / academia.

// Teaching Methodology // Tools

//Studio is structured to teach participants the use of computational techniques through Grasshopper® (Generative modeling plug-in for Rhino®) and ways to integrate it with architectural & urban systems.
//No previous knowledge of Grasshopper & Rhinoceros is required for these workshops as basic technical knowledge will be provided on Day01.
//Pre-designed customizable tools will be provided by rat[LAB]EDU on Day02 for design explorations & experimentations.
//The studio is flexible to basic, intermediate & advanced users of computation.

// Technical Sessions
Technical sessions will be provided to give an insight to computation, algorithms and parametric design methodologies to students & professionals. The idea of designing parametrically and use of computational methodologies is new to Indian context and has great potentials across various design disciplines. Digital experimentations using computational techniques (primarily Rhino3D + Grasshopper) will initiate the discourse, followed by technical sessions, theoretical discussions and presentations.

// About rat[LAB] EDUCATION
rat[LAB] EDUCATION is an initiative by rat[LAB]-Research in Architecture & Technology (www.rat-lab.org) to start a new discourse in architecture & parallel design disciplines with the use of ‘computational design’ & it’s various subsets. Spread across various cities / countries, we are establishing a global dialogue in the domain of computational design by actively organizing and participating in workshops, lectures, presentations & symposia. While rat[LAB] has taken a top-down approach of exploring computational design through industry, a parallel, bottom-up approach is also in-line to involve students of all levels, from design & related backgrounds.

Gender. Hysteria. Architecture. | “How Did a Diagnosis Learn to Draw Walls?”

Did these spaces heal women or teach them how to disappear? Aditi A., through her research study as a part of the CEPT Writing Architecture course, in this chapter follows hysteria as it migrates from text to typology, inquiring how architectural decisions came to stand in for care itself. Rather than assuming architecture responded to illness, the inquiry turns the question around: did architecture help produce the vulnerability it claimed to manage?

Gender. Hysteria. Architecture. | “When Did Care Become Confinement?”

Was architecture used by society to spatially “manage” women and their autonomy? Aditi A., through her research study as a part of the CEPT Writing Architecture course, examines the period before psychiatry, when fear had already become architectural, tracing how women’s autonomy was spatially managed through domestic regulation, witch hunts, informal confinement, and early institutional planning.

A Modernist’s Doubt: Symbolism and the Late Career Turn

Why did acclaimed modernist architects suddenly introduce historical symbolism like arches, decorative elements, and other cultural references into their work after decades of disciplined restraint? Sudipto Ghosh interrogates this 1980s-90s symbolic turn as a rupture in architecture, questioning whether this represents an authentic reconnection with content and memory, or is it a mere superficial gesture towards absent meanings. Drawing from Heidegger’s analysis of the Greek temple, he distinguishes two modes of architectural representation, ultimately judging that this turn was a nascent rebellion against modernism that may have failed to achieve genuine integration of context, material, and memory.

The City That Could Be: An Ode to Pune

Narendra Dengle, through his poem written in January 2006, presents a deep utopic vision for Pune—what the city could be as an ecologically sustainable, equitable city that balances nature with development. He sets ambitious benchmarks for prioritizing public transport over cars, preserving heritage, addressing slum rehabilitation humanely, and empowering local communities
