It's a tricky thing really, to design a space that is modern and muted yet vividly engaging. But for a young couple in Bangalore that’s exactly what was done. It’s a tricky thing really, to design a space that is modern and muted yet vividly engaging. But for a young couple in Bangalore that’s exactly what was done. Located in Park Square, the three-bedroom apartment is in a quiet neighbourhood of the city. The client also wanted the space to echo a casual chic vibe. Darshana Patel and Rashmin Perla, Principal Designers, Signa Design were up for the challenge.

Anyone familiar with a designer’s aesthetic knows how they revel in creating multifunctional spaces with just the right hints of colour and texture. The first thing they did was to create an open floor plan that would accentuate, a decluttered look. Therefore, the entrance opens into the living-cum-dining room that moves into a balcony. The dining is cleverly tucked into a corner of its own to create a feeling of warmth yet allowing the homeowners clear open spaces for easy movement. Keeping the private and public areas separate from one another a corridor was created that leads to the bedrooms—the master, guest and children’s room.

The client wanted the layout to be dynamic so they used contemporary furniture and added clever design elements to include vibrancy. Take the living room for instance. A custom brass wall hung rack by the entryway creates a sense of drama, adds a luxe element to the home, and helps gently transition into the living area. The textured sofa in pastel shades balances the glitz of the brass from the rack and the side tables. The TV is mounted behind a vertical box hiding the set up box, Apple TV and WiFi Router. To enhance this functional space, the panel is fixed on top of a geometric pattern, painted wall. The furniture is custom designed but the showstopper is the centre table in a metal frame with a verified tile top.

The dining sits pretty besides the semi-open kitchen (that even makes room for a home bar) for easy access. To give it that casual chic vibe, Darshana has used a custom made dining table with a wrought iron metal base in signal red and a Statuario marble table top. On one side of this table are dining chairs custom made with woven vinyl backs and the other a comfortable sofa. Tying the space together are the fabric artworks on the wall—embroidery loops in white finish.

The drama continues into the bedrooms. So, if the master bedroom has a headboard with a custom denim cushion mounted on a brass rail and matching brass side tables, the headboard in the guest bedroom extends to form the framework for shelves in oakwood. The kids’ bedroom design is all about an intimate, dreamscape with a custom bed and sofa in the centre and a play table in the space between the beds.

“Adaptive design is important to understand the client requirements, likes, dislikes and design cues. My ability to custom create the furniture in my own factory is my signature style. Every single fixture and each furniture for this project including the metalwork has been custom made, adding that sense of uniqueness and cohesiveness to the design,” shares Ms. Darshana Patel – Head Designer – Signa Design.

“If the received wisdom of this Western historiography is Eurocentric and subjective, how do we trace the evolution of architectural consciousness in India?”—Jaimini Mehta

The essay is the second of a three-part series of preview essays for Jaimini Mehta’s forthcoming book, Sense of Itihasa; Architecture and History in Modern India. He explores how colonial perspectives distorted Indian architectural history, arguing that indigenous architectural theories existed beyond Eurocentric interpretations, with the mandala symbolizing a deeper conceptual understanding of cosmic and spatial design.

Jaimini Mehta - Architecture and History

“Unless you ask these questions, you will not realise that it is not history but the perception of history that needs to be revisited.”—Jaimini Mehta

The essay is the first of a three-part series of preview essays for Jaimini Mehta’s forthcoming book, Sense of Itihasa; Architecture and History in Modern India.
