Session Brief
As architectural/ design writers, we struggle to explain design, trying to convey metaphors, symbolism, and larger narratives, while unravelling the entire process of designing through words. Not the end. We feel overwhelmed by the thoughts behind it, question designs, overcome writers’ block, and develop a love-hate relationship with AI. And the list continues.
Amidst this chaos, this session is a peek into critical writing. The aim is to ponder the question of why we write. It sheds light on what it means to write critically. It explores architectural critics from the past and offers a window into the broad styles they have developed over the years.
Through this session, participants will gain clarity on critical writing by learning to analyse and interpret architecture beyond surface-level observations. They will study the approaches of historical architectural critics, uncovering diverse styles and techniques that have shaped critical discourse, and build confidence in formulating meaningful questions about architecture, engaging with architects, users, and the built environment.
Participants will also discover strategies to overcome creative barriers and learn to develop personal thumb rules: practical, self-crafted guidelines. These include consistently questioning the intent behind design choices, cross-referencing user experiences with architectural intent, identifying patterns in design language, and grounding critiques in contextual research. By the end, participants will leave with a sharper critical lens, practical writing techniques, and a renewed sense of purpose in actively questioning and shaping the narratives of the built.
