ArchitectureLive! Knowledge Series

On the Practice of Critique

The act of designing in the profession of architecture has always existed with its critics. From Vitruvius, Alberti, Venturi, Reyner Banham, Aaron Betsky, Anthony Vidler, Ada Louise Huxtable, Jane Jacobs, to Sarah Whitting, Jaimini Mehta, Michael Hays, Manfredo Tafuri, and so on, the act of building has been inseparable from the act of interpreting, questioning, and contextualising through texts.

In the same vein, ArchitectureLive! brings together several architectural writers, architectural historians, architectural critics, and theorists to examine the evolving relationship between architectural creation and critique, exploring how writing about architecture doesn’t merely document or evaluate, but is an active participant in challenging and transforming.

The workshops and online sessions in this series seek to illuminate a different facet of writing about architecture—its power to champion the emerging, its capacity to challenge the established, and its role in public discourse about the built environment.
