Session Brief
Good architecture doesn’t happen in isolation. The most innovative and enduring designs emerge from rigorous yet supportive critique. As renowned critic Ada Louise Huxtable noted, criticism makes “the language of architecture universal”—bridging the gap between designers and the public they serve.
The session by Henri Arthur Fanthome, organised by ArchitectureLive!, will focus on a comprehensive evaluation of architectural designs, focusing on key aspects such as functionality, aesthetics, sustainability, and user experience.
The objective is to understand how to cultivate visual literacy and critical thinking that improves the architectural review writing, for writers. On the other hand, the session also aims to let architects understand critical analysis to understand what works (and what doesn’t), developing a sharper eye for designs that may directly translate into your projects.
Who is Henri Arthur Fanthome?
Henri Fanthome trained at the School of Planning and Architecture, graduating with a first-class Bachelor’s in Architecture in 2004. He worked with reputed architects Romi Khosla Design Associates, Ashish Ganju Architects, and S.Ghosh and Associates before setting up an independent practice in 2009 with his proposal for the new campus for the School of Planning and Architecture at Vasant Kunj. The entry was well received and acknowledged.
He has since worked on projects of varying scale, both independently and as an associate to much larger practices where he has led the design teams to conceptualise and realise numerous projects.
From 2009 to 2020, Henri was actively involved in teaching splitting his time between practice and teaching, at both the SPA and Pearl Academy in the field of Architectural Design and Interior Architecture.
As of 2021, he has been actively involved in practice, both independently and collaborating with larger entities on numerous projects, leading design teams to conceptualise and design large scale projects like schools, hospitals, institutions, libraries, etc.
He has been an Associated Architect to larger practices, collaborating on schools, institutional buildings, healthcare and office buildings. His work is widely appreciated in the design community, having featured in design competitions and also receiving a few prestigious awards for his work. His project, the Catholic Cemetery, Gurugram, was one of 50 projects from across the country to be selected and featured in the first volume of Unbuilt India, a book celebrating unrealised projects across the country.
His work is driven by concerns for Environmental Responsibility, Sustainability, Bio-Climatic Design principles and Social and Economic Inclusivity.
He also wrote the “CityScapes”, a bi-weekly op-ed on Design , Architecture and Urbanism for the National Daily, The Free Press Journal. And is now working on more long form articles that will be published in the future.
