Bimal Patel

Dr. Bimal Patel is an architect, urbanist and academic with over 35 years of professional, research and teaching experience in architecture, urban design and urban planning. He heads HCP Design, Planning and Management Pvt. Ltd. as its Chairman and Managing Director. In 1996, Bimal founded Environmental Planning Collaborative (EPC), a not-for-profit consultancy and policy-research and advocacy organization. He was the President & Acting Director of CEPT University, Ahmedabad, from 2012 to 2024. Some of his significant projects include the Bhuj Development Plan and Town Planning Schemes (post-earthquake), C.G. Road Redevelopment, Gujarat High Court, Himmatnagar Canalfront Development, IIM Ahmedabad New Campus, Kankaria Lake Development, Sabarmati Riverfront Development, and Central Vista Redevelopment.

On January 24, 2023, one of India’s most renowned architects passed away. With the passing of B.V. Doshi at the age of 95, Indian Architecture witnessed the end of an era. This tribute by Doshi’s student and later contemporary, Bimal Patel, was first published in ‘The Indian Express’.
