India’s development journey is deeply intertwined with the evolution of its cities, which have become vibrant centers of culture, innovation, and economic growth. Among these growing cities, Pune has been one of the fastest-growing urban cities, establishing itself as a hub of education and technology, and playing a key role in this transformation.
Over the past five decades, as Pune evolves into a thriving urban hub, one can say that VK Group has been at the forefront of this transformation—shaping its public spaces sustainably. Through their multidisciplinary approach and an extensive portfolio of projects, they have integrated thoughtful design, research, sustainability and community-driven design solutions.
VK Group’s Integrated Approach to Urban Development
VK Group’s built-environment consultancy services are structured into five specialized verticals, each addressing different aspect of urban development:
- VK:a architecture: Designing holistic spaces across sectors and scales.
- VK:u urban: Creating master plans, townships, and urban design interventions that prioritize smart and inclusive growth.
- VK:i interiors: Crafting interior spaces that align functionality with aesthetics and innovation.
- VK:e environmental: Implementing sustainable practices through green building certifications and environmental research.
- VK:o operations: Ensuring seamless execution and operational management by handling the entire breadth of backend operations like HR, quality control, Accounts and IT.
VK Group’s commitment to shaping Pune extends beyond physical infrastructure—fostering discussions and collaborations that inform better design and planning. The built environment consultancy recently celebrated over 51 successful years of practice in Pune with a three-day event and exhibition titled ‘VKollective’. It showcased significant works of the firm across all verticals and presented a timeline tracing milestone design aspects introduced to Pune’s urban landscape.
The event also brought together leaders from architecture, governance, urban planning, education, and business sectors to discuss key urban challenges and opportunities. It was an emphasis on the importance of knowledge-sharing in designing future-ready cities.
As IAS officer Shri Kunal Kumar stated, during one of the panel discussions at VKollective, “Without infrastructure, there is no development of the city—the Mumbai-Pune expressway helped develop Pune city at a faster pace as it harbored an era of connectivity,” the emphasis lies on building for the people.
VK Group’s work embodies this philosophy, demonstrating how well-designed infrastructure catalyzes urban growth and economic progress.
Architectural Innovation in Pune’s Landscape
The architectural practice at VK group – VK:a has significantly influenced Pune’s cityscape through various residential, commercial, institutional, and civic projects. VK:a has been a pioneer in introducing innovative design elements to the city’s residential infrastructure, such as double-height alternating terraces.
Through landmark projects like Nandan Prospera in Baner, K52 at Karve Nagar, and Abhiruchi mall at Vadgaon, the practice has defined thoughtful design, through curvilinear floor plans that maximise space utilization, staggering of volumes to ensure light, ventilation, and views from three directions instead of the usual two that residential projects conventionally provide. Their projects prioritize green spaces, functionality, and long-term adaptability, setting new benchmarks in modern architecture.

With the significant influx of youth to the city, VK Group’s ‘Youthville’ – a hostel project, has made an important contribution to addressing housing needs as apartment rental costs increase rapidly, and formal rental housing becomes unaffordable for the young migrating population.

Urban Planning for Sustainable Growth
The firm’s urban vertical, VK:u, focuses on large-scale design, planning, and sustainable urban growth. Their projects emphasize well-integrated infrastructure, pedestrian-friendly designs, and efficient public transport networks. This is well demonstrated in projects such as Unicity Township in North Hinjewadi and Maharashtra Police Megacity in Lohegaon. Their work in Solapur Smart City and the Draft Development Plan of Phaltan, Satara, further reflects their effort to enhance livability in growing urban centres.
The draft master plan of the heritage town of Pandharpur, renowned for its “vaari”, was prepared by the VK:u vertical. The plan ensures seamless integration of spaces for community-led activities, accommodating the Pandharpur yatra processions and related functions. The inclusion of heritage aspects in urban-level design solutions sets a standard that other design and planning professionals can adopt.

Interior Design that Enhances User Experience
VK Group’s interior vertical, VK:i, focuses on creating spaces that balance aesthetics with practicality, while enhancing the user experience. Notable projects like Kynd Cafe and Epitome at the Raja Bahadur Mills, the Aloha Cardio Cafe at Karve Nagar showcase their ability to create inspiring yet functional spaces. From restaurants to healthcare facilities, VK:i focuses on user-centric designs that respond to the evolving lifestyle needs.

Environmental Sustainability as a Core Value
The changing climate across the globe in the past decade has led to the formation of climate action plans with target goals for industries to reduce their carbon emissions. In response to global climate change concerns and the growing necessity for structures with minimal environmental impact, VK:e ensures comprehensive environmental impact assessments, green building certifications, sustainability reporting, green product certifications, building engineering services, and many more. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) serves as a scientific tool to mitigate climate change impacts, functioning as an initial step towards reducing carbon footprint and advancing towards carbon neutrality.
VK:e has numerous certified projects beyond the IGBC platinum certified projects like MAgile in Baner and A81 in Mundhwa, which exemplify energy efficiency, water conservation, and ecological balance. The Environmental Impact Assessment done for the Bal Bharati Paud-Phata Link Road also highlights their commitment to minimizing urban congestion and pollution.
Operations
Efficient project execution has been the key to VK Group’s success. Their operations vertical, VK:o, ensures immaculate coordination, quality control, and timely delivery across their vast portfolio. This holistic approach strengthens their reputation in delivering projects that balance form, function, and efficiency.
Research Initiatives Driving Innovation
Beyond their core verticals and projects, VK Group actively contributes to Pune’s future through their independent initiatives—CuMiLab and Sustainability Initiative (SI)—and their advocacy and outreach programs.
CuMiLab (Curious Minds Laboratory) is a research and experimentation cell aimed at investigating, innovating and improving design processes and services in the Indian context. It proposes alternative systems that are energy efficient or involve unconventional systems. This research initiative addresses real-world challenges in the built-environment by developing scalable solutions.
This can be observed through their exploration in projects such as ‘1tF’ or One tree per family, where the facade of the built form is designed to accommodate one tree in each balcony through a sectional play. In cities with concerns surrounding the depleting air quality, such a proposition is instrumental for the future.

Sustainability Initiatives (SI) is a Pune-based non-profit that strives towards development of cities through sustainable development goals in the context of Indian cities. Supported by VK group, the organisation is making a difference through the mediums of research and publication, capacity building, advocacy and outreach, and community contributions.
SI published a book in collaboration with Dr. B.N. College of Architecture and Royal University of Arts, Stockholm which features an action plan for the conservation of the historic core of Pune city. Some of their other activities include outreach through awareness programs and workshops such as energy audits and training sessions, building libraries for the underprivileged kids, tree plantation drives, observing the Earth Hour at the workplace, and analysing their energy consumption and consciously making an effort to reduce it.

A Vision for the Future of Urban Development
Through these efforts, VK Group reinforces its vision of city-building that prioritizes people, resources, and long-term resilience. VK Group’s influence in Pune goes beyond architectural landmarks—it is reflected in their commitment to thoughtful city-making.
We believe that speculations of the built environment for the future must involve detailed research and become the driving force of architectural and construction organisations not just to ‘build for’ but also to maintain a quality of life in Indian cities that makes them more than just livable.
Looking ahead, research will continue to drive innovation in the architecture and planning industry. Design firms must integrate deeper contextual analysis, material exploration, and sustainable methodologies to create cities that are resilient and adaptive. VK Group’s approach exemplifies how urban development should evolve—grounded in research, sustainability and people-first design. By prioritizing these elements, we can truly shape the city of tomorrow, ensuring that it remains inclusive, livable, and future-ready.
